Habitat utilization of mammals in a man-made forest in the Sandhills region of Nebraska.

The Sandhills Region of Nebraska is located in the central and northern portion of Nebraska. Within this region is the Bessey Division of the Nebraska National Forest. The Bessey Division encompasses 36,560 ha of which approximately 8,900 ha are forested; all forested lands are man-planted. Forest types include monocultures of three species; ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), jack pine (Pinus banksiana), and Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana). This represents the largest man-made Forest in the National Forest System of the United States. The remaining 27,660 ha are of native grasses. Also a narrow strip of riparian habitat runs along the northern and southern boundaries of the Bessey Division. The primary objective of my study was to determine what influence this man-made forest has had on the native mammals (43 species) inhabiting the Sandhills Region. Results indicate that 32.6% of mammalian species on the Bessey Division have been inhibited in their distribution or have decreased in relative numbers; 39.5% of mammalian species have expanded their range or increased in relative numbers as a result of afforestation, and the remaining species were unaffected by the planting of a forest. Although there were some notable exceptions, grassland species were inhibited, woodland species expanded, and those species which are ecologically tide to water remained unaffected. Cedar plantations were found to have the greatest abundance of small mammals, higher than the other plantations or the native habitats, and the species diversity was similar to the native habitats

Copyright is held by the publisher.While the impact of the humanistic emblem tradition as embodied by Andrea Alciati’s work in Baltasar Gracián’s three-part novel El Criticón (1651, 1653 and 1657) is well documented, the allegorical novel’s relationship with the Jesuit emblem tradition has not been considered in detail. This essay explores the relationship between the emblem tradition of the Society of Jesus as developed in the Imago primi saeculi Societatis Iesu a Prouincia Flandro-Belgica eiusdem Societatis repraesentata (1640) and El Criticón. In engaging with the Jesuit emblem tradition, Gracián makes secular interpretations of established Jesuit imagery. Not only does this intertextual relationship enrich the interpretation of El Criticón, but also explains the Jesuit hierarchy’s negative reaction to the novel

Reconstruction in Kentucky.

Reconstruction began in Kentucky somewhat sooner than in the States south of the Blue Grass Commonwealth. As soon as the invading Confederate army withdrew from the State in 1862, loyal Kentuckians began to prepare for peaceful pursuits and to restore the State, as best they could, to somewhat the position it occupied before the war between the states. Of course it was impossible to remake the State as it was before the struggle, but at least the civil authority could be restored, and the State prepared for the reign of peace. The dates 1862 to 1870 have been selected as the period of Reconstruction in Kentucky, because it was in 1862 that such a process was begun, and the State was practically free of military rule by 1870, and Kentuckians of both northern and southern sympathies, had by that time forgotten the old animosities of the past and were mingling freely as if nothing had ever separated them; both were admiring the bravery and gallantry of the other. For convenience this thesis has been divided into four chapters. The first subject to claim the attention of a student of Kentucky history during the period of reconstruction is military interference within the State, which nearly supplanted the civil authority for a period of almost three years. Therefore, the first chapter is concerned with Military Authority in Kentucky. Following close after the period of excessive military rule in the State, the activities of the Freedmen’s Bureau occupy the center of the stage, and a second chapter, and the largest, has been devoted to this institution. Many Kentuckians, angered over the conduct of affairs by the federal military officers in the State, organized themselves into secret bands of “Regulators”, and it has been thought wise to devote a chapter to such activities. The last chapter, on the “Politics of Reconstruction”, is an attempt to explain the changes in political complexion of the State during the period from 1862 to 1870, showing how Kentucky emerged from the struggle with an extremely union sentiment, and gradually changed to a thoroughly Democratic policy
